Generation 1

1.      THOMAS1 WAITE was born about 1615 in England. He died before 14 Dec 1669 in Portsmouth, Providence Co, RI. He married ELEANOR UNKNOWN. She died after 14 Dec 1669 in Portsmouth, Providence Co, RI. Thomas is my 10th Great Grandfather.

Notes for Thomas Waite:

Thomas Waite was probably born in England about 1615. He married Eleanor who was alive and living 14 December 1669. Nothing is known with certainly in regard to the English antecedants of Thomas Waite, but he may be identical with Thomas, sixth son of Samuel and Mary (Ward) Waite of Wethersfield, County Essex, England, who were the progenitors of the Waites of Malden, Massachusetts. (Cf. Register, Vol. 32, page 188). The recurrence of the same Christian names in both families tends to confirm this view. On 1 July 1639 he was granted land at Portsmouth. On 16 March 1641 he was admitted a freeman of that town, and received further grants there of land in 1644 and 1646. On 8 July 1650 he was a juryman. On 7 June 1858, and again in 1663, he was chosen constable. On 30 April 1661 he purchased of William Earle one-fourth of a share of the Acushnet and Coxet lands, in what is now Dartmouth, Massachusetts. He was one of the purchasers of Conanicut and Dutch Islands in 1656, and was also a large owner of lands at Narragansett and Misquamicut (Westerly). On 4 December 1669 his estate was divided by the Portsmouth Town Council among his wife and children. The division shows that his wife was named Eleanor and the children names were Samuel, Thomas, Benjamin, Reuben, Jeremiah, and Mary. Joseph, having died previously, is not mentioned. Thomas and Jeremiah were under twenty-one. The document dividing the estate was long lost, but was found in the winter of 1913-14 in the cellar of the Portsmouth Town House.

Thomas Waite and Eleanor Unknown had the following children:

Notes for Joseph Waite:

The Town Council of Portsmouth granted administration on his estate to his widow, Sarah, and made provision for her unborn child. As no provision was made for this child in the division of the estate of Thomas Waite in 1669, it may abe assumed that is was stillborn or died young. «i»note: Mr. Austin in his account of this family and John Cassan Wait in his Descendants of Thomas Wait credit Joseph Waite with a son, William Wait of Rochester, Massachusetts; but an examination of the Rochester records shows that this man was named William Wiett (i.e., Wyatt).«/i»

His house, one of the oldest in Dartmouth, is still standing in that section of the town lying between Accoxet and Appomagansett. The earliest parts were probably built as early as 1669, and it seems to have escaped the general destruction that overtook the town in King Philip's War.
