Notes for James Rodgers Sr:

Rodgers Name Meaning

Over half of the Rodgers family in Ireland are in Ulster, and many of the name in Ireland will be descendants of immigrant ancestors. There is evidence, however, that Rodgers was taken as an anglicization of their name by families of native Irish origin whose Irish name Mac Ruaidhri was otherwise anglicized as McRory and McCrory. Early records include Rogerus Marescalcus, listed as a tenant in the Domesday Book of 1086. Willemus Rogerson was mentioned in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. The name was exceedingly common in the 13th century throughout the land, considered to be 'a knightly name'.

When the sparse Irish population began to increase it became necessary to broaden the base of personal identification by moving from single names to a more definite nomenclature. The prefix MAC was given to the father's christian name, or O to that of a grandfather or even earlier ancestor. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield and embroidered on his surcoat, the draped and flowing garment worn over the armour. This name was originally from the German personal name, composed of the elements 'hrod' (renown) and 'geri' (spear), which was introduced into England by the Normans in the form Rogier. The associated arms are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884. Surnames as we know them today were first assumed in Europe from the 11th to the 15th Century. The employment in the use of a second name was a custom that was first introduced from the Normans. They themselves had not long before adopted them. It became, in course of time, a mark of gentler blood, and it was deemed a disgrace for gentlemen to have but one single name, as the meaner sort had.

At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield and embroidered on his surcoat, the flowing and draped garment worn over the armour.

There are MANY genealogies posted on the internet that are INCORRECT about my Rodgers line. I have straightened out several mistakes, but I also know it will take more time to properly document everything. James Rodgers, wife Elizabeth Dobyns, and children Thomas, James, Samuel, John, and a daughter, Jean, left Ireland for the United States, arriving in Philadelphia 1777. (It is stated in SAR applications that the family was from Dublin, but I have not been able to confirm this. More about the SAR application later…) James took his Oath of Allegiance to the State of Pennsylvania from Thompson Westcott upon arrival in Philadelphia.

It is not known where the family was between their arrival 1777 and the 1785, but presumably they were in Northumberland Co. In 1785, James is found on the Northumberland Co tax list. James Rodgers is found living in Sunbury, Northumberland Co, PA in the 1790 census. Listed with him, is his wife, a boy under 16 (probably Samuel), daughter, Jean and a son, John. His sons, James, Jr is living in Fermanagh Twp, Mifflin (now Juniata) Co, PA, and Thomas is living in Sunbury, Northumberland Co, PA. The family seems well settled in Northumberland Co, suggesting they have been there for a while. By 1800, most of the family (whereabouts of Jean is not known) had left Northumberland Co.

In 1800, James is found living in Fermanagh Twp next to his son, James, Jr. This is believed to be a short stay, as James, Sr and his son, Thomas and his family, move to Crawford Co, PA by 1802. James and son Thomas bought 219 acres of land Sept 16, 1805 from John Duffield. The 219 acres stretched from Mead Twp to Hayfield Twp. James, Sr is believed to have died between 1806 and 1810. He is not found in the 1810 census. He deeded his portion of the farm in Hayfield Twp to his grandson

Alexander, son of Thomas. This portion of the Rogers farm, is now where the Acker-Rogers Cemetery is now located. There are MANY unmarked graves in the back of the cemetery, and I believe this is where James and his wife, Elizabeth and other Rodgers family members are buried. There are no records as to who is buried there. Information on the cemetery may be found under Alexander Rodgers.

Now for the SAR application. The application for SAR was filed May 9, 1933. This was long before any documentation was required for acceptance. A ‘genealogist’ by the name of Ella G Edmonds is the person that compiled the information for the application. She states:

“James Rodgers served in the Revolution as a private in the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania militia, in the First Battalion, Third Company, under Captain Mathias Slaymaker. Reference: Penna Archives, 5th Series, Vol. VII - pg 59 & 95.

He was born in 1740, died about 1795; married 1760-1763, Miss Dobyns in Ireland. In 1765, he is registered as a land owner in Lancaster County. Reference: Penna Archives, 3rd Series, Vol. XXIV, pg 314.

From 1785, his residence was in Northumberland County, Pine Tree Township. Reference: Penna Archives, 3rd Series, Vol. XIX, pg 712.

Both he and his wife are buried in the old cemetery in Pine Tree Township, Northumberland County.”

A James Rogers WAS living in Lancaster/Dauphin Co, PA, born 1735 and died 1790. He was married to Florence Hutchinson. They had a son, James, married to Eleanor Boyd. James, Jr was born 1768 and died 1823. They are both buried in the Old Hanover Presbyterian Cemetery, Dauphin Co, PA. This is the James Rogers that fought in the Rev War from Lancaster Co. And I have found no evidence that mine did fight in the Rev War. Some things she DID get correct, but it seems that what she couldn’t find on my James, she threw things in about the Dauphin Co James. And this information has been perpetuated ever since.

James Rodgers and his wife Elizabeth Dobyns did NOT die in Northumberland Co, PA and are not buried there. James made his will September 28, 1802 in Crawford Co, PA. Mentioned in his will are his wife, Elizabeth, Alexander Rodgers, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Rodgers, James Rodgers, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Rodgers, daughter, Jean Rodgers and son John Rodgers, son James and Samuel is not named in the will.

James Rodgers Sr and Elizabeth Dobyns had the following children:

He married Margaret Dill, daughter of James (Maj) Dill Sr on 19 Jan 1789 in Fermanagh, Mifflin (now Juniata) Co, PA. She was born about 1770 in York Co, PA. He married Margaret Dill, daughter of James (Maj) Dill Sr on 19 Jan 1789 in Fermanagh, Mifflin (now Juniata) Co, PA. She was born about 1770 in York Co, PA. She died between 1820-1830 in Lack Twp, Mifflin (now Juniata) Co, PA.

Notes for James RodgersJr:

The first record I have found on James, Jr, was his marriage to Margaret Dill, Thursday, January 15, 1789, "at the seat of James Dill, Fermanagh Township". I'm not sure what a "seat" is, but I assume it means James Dill's house. Margaret was James Dill's sister. Their father was James Dill, Sr, killed at the battle of Brandywine 1777. The Dills were living in Sunbury, Northumberland Co at the time, as were the Rodgers.

The next record of James is in the 1790 census, where he and his wife Margaret are living with James Dill, Fermanagh, Mifflin Co. From 1800 - 1820, James and Margaret are living next to James Dill on bounty land received from James Dill, Sr's death in the Rev War. (More on the land can be found under James Dill.)

I know the family was still in Fermanagh Twp 1825, as their son, John, married Margaret Williams in Beal Twp about 1825. By 1830, James and Margaret were living in Crawford Co, PA in South Shenango Twp. They died sometime between 1830 - 1840 and are probably with others in Acker-Rogers Cemetery in unmarked graves. I am still trying to sort out their children. From the census records, they had 4 boys and 4 girls. As of yet, I have only found the boys.

Notes for Erastus Edmund Rogers:

Rock Island County Ill Portrait & Biographical Album

Dr. E.E. Rogers, residing at Port Byron, is one of the prominent and substantial business men of that place. He is a native of Plainfield,

Ohio, where he was born Nov. 14, 1829. The parents of Dr. Rodgers were John and Margaret (Williams) Rogers, natives of Mifflin County, Pa. They were among the early pioneers of Ohio, where they resided until their deaths.

Dr. Rogers was educated in the schools of Zanesville and Athens, his native State, and completed his education by a thorough and complete academical course. At an early age he determined to adopt the profession of medicine as the business of his life, and with that end in view he read the standard text books of medicine while yet in his minority. When he attained his majority he came to Davenport, IA., arriving there in April, 1850. He remained there until the May following, when he came to Illinois and settled at Port Byron, hung out his shingle and commenced the practice of his profession. The county at that time was thinly settled, entailing

upon the Doctor long and fatiguing rides to visit patients living in remote settlements; but he was possessed of a stout and vigorous brain that has never known an hour of sickness during the last 35 years. In 1855, realizing the importance of having pure drugs in his practice, he opened a drug store in connection with the practice of his profession, in which business he is still connected with his son. In 1871, Dr. Rogers began the banking business and established the bank known as the Bank of Port Byron, under the firm name of E.E. Rogers & Sons. The bank is well and favorably known throughout financial circles. It is regarded as one of the solid institutions of the county. The volume of business transacted by the bank has aggregated $1,500,000. Prior to engaging in the banking business Dr. Rogers commenced dealing in grain, shipping, etc., and the firm as it now exists was organized in 1871.

As seen by the foregoing, the life of Dr. Rogers has been one of business activity. He belongs to that class of Western men who are noted for their push and enterprise, good judgment and energy. It is needless to say that the energy, tact and good judgment of Dr. Rogers has brought its reward in wealth that ranks him among the substantial citizens of Rock Island County. His accumulation of this world's goods is attributable to none other than his own indomitable energy, keen judgment and energetic endeavor.

In December, 1853, Dr. Rogers was united in marriage with Miss Susan Moore, a native of Vermont, at Port Byron. The issue of their union has been two sons, - Frank E. and Edward M. Both the sons are partners in the firm of E.E. Rogers & Sons, bankers, grain dealer and druggists at Port Byron.

Frank E. Rogers, eldest son of the Doctor, married Miss E. A. Maxwell, and they have two children,- Walter Harry and Hazel. Edward M. Rogers, second child of the Doctor, married Miss Elizabeth McCall, and they have one child, Bertha by name.

Mrs. Rogers, wife of the subject of this notice, is a member of the Congregational Church. Socially, Doctor Rogers belongs to Port Byron Lodge, No. 624, I.O.O.F. Politically, he comes from good old Democratic stock, his first Presidential vote having been cast for Franklin Pierce in 1852, and since that time he has not failed to cast his vote in support of the principles of that party. Thus, in short, is the brief biographical sketch of Dr. Rogers, and thus we have an exemplification of what push and energy may accomplish. He started out in life with nothing but a strong determination to succeed and a healthy constitution, and by his energy and perseverance has procured a competency and a name and reputation second to none in the community in which he resides for fair and honest dealing with his fellow-man.
