Generation 1

1.      GREGORY1 BELCHER was born about 1606 in England. He died on 25 Nov 1674 in Braintree, Norfolk Co, Ma. He married CATHERINE UNKNOWN. She died in 1680 in Braintree, Norfolk Co, Ma. Gregory is my 10th Great Grandfather.

Notes for Gregory Belcher: Belcher (Belshar) etc.

Gregory1 Belcher was born about 1606 in England and was probably the son of Thomas Belcher, baptized Mar.30,1606 at Aston, Co. Warwick, England. There was a Gregory Belcher, yeoman, of Berkeswell, Co. Warwick who left a will dated Mar.20,1620 in which he mentions wife Joane, son Thomas, sons in law John Bonney and William Cook, daughters Elizabeth Cook, Isabel Bonney, and Alice Pemberton. (See Register Vol.60 for further detail of the origin of this family). (Three wills also in Putnam's Monthly Historical Magazine, June-July 1896).

Gregory1 Belcher came to New England about 1634 and soon settled at Braintree (now Quincy) and on Dec.30,1639 was granted a lot of 52 acres at Mt. Wollaston for 13 heads, his family. The exact bounds has not been determined, but it was along Franklin St. just north of Pernis Hill.

He was made freeman of the colony May 13,1640 and was a selectman in 1646. In a deposition in June 1665 he calls himself aged about 60 years. (Essex County Court Files).

On Jan.6,1657/8 he leased from heirs of William Tyng of Boston the Salter Farm in Braintree (now Wollaston) and on Jan.15,1666/7 he was one of a group of five men who purchased the farm, his interest being 1/8 part. (S.D. 5-229). On Mar.26,1670 he and his son in law Alexander Marsh purchased 200 acres of the Iron Works land, where the furnace stood (in West Quincy) and May

18,1671 they bought 40 acres adjacent to the above at Crane's Plain on the Milton line. (S.D. 7-172) He also leased April 1,1658 from Boston the Blue Hill lands in Braintree.  535

Gregory1Belcher died Nov.25,1674.

His wife was Catherine - who died in 1680 leaving a will dated Sep.3,1679, proved July 20,1680, mentioning son Josiah, son John, daughters Elizabeth Gilbert, Mary Marsh, grand daughter Mary Marsh, and son Moses who was to have "the whole house and land he now possesses which I declare his father gave him."

Gregory Belcher was one of the eight original members, founders of the First Church in Braintree (now Quincy) Sep.16,1639, three months before his grant of land, so was probably residing here already on one of the large farms where he raised cattle. In 1659 he stated he had been in the country about 25 years and had about 80 head of cattle and petitioned for a grant of 1000 acres but it was not given to him. He was in Braintree before Aug. 1637 when his son Samuel was born.

Henry Bartlett a servant of Gregory Belcher was listed in the inventory and was valued at £5. He was probably an apprentice and he served the town of Braintree in King Philip's War 1675.

Notes for Erastus Edmund Rogers:

Rock Island County Ill Portrait & Biographical Album

Dr. E.E. Rogers, residing at Port Byron, is one of the prominent and substantial business men of that place. He is a native of Plainfield,

Ohio, where he was born Nov. 14, 1829. The parents of Dr. Rodgers were John and Margaret (Williams) Rogers, natives of Mifflin County, Pa. They were among the early pioneers of Ohio, where they resided until their deaths.

Dr. Rogers was educated in the schools of Zanesville and Athens, his native State, and completed his education by a thorough and complete academical course. At an early age he determined to adopt the profession of medicine as the business of his life, and with that end in view he read the standard text books of medicine while yet in his minority. When he attained his majority he came to Davenport, IA., arriving there in April, 1850. He remained there until the May following, when he came to Illinois and settled at Port Byron, hung out his shingle and commenced the practice of his profession. The county at that time was thinly settled, entailing

upon the Doctor long and fatiguing rides to visit patients living in remote settlements; but he was possessed of a stout and vigorous brain that has never known an hour of sickness during the last 35 years. In 1855, realizing the importance of having pure drugs in his practice, he opened a drug store in connection with the practice of his profession, in which business he is still connected with his son. In 1871, Dr. Rogers began the

banking business and established the bank known as the Bank of Port Byron, under the firm name of E.E. Rogers & Sons. The bank is well and favorably known throughout financial circles. It is regarded as one of the solid institutions of the county. The volume of business transacted by the bank has aggregated $1,500,000. Prior to engaging in the banking business Dr. Rogers commenced dealing in grain, shipping, etc., and the firm as it now exists was organized in 1871.

As seen by the foregoing, the life of Dr. Rogers has been one of business activity. He belongs to that class of Western men who are noted for their push and enterprise, good judgment and energy. It is needless to say that the energy, tact and good judgment of Dr. Rogers has brought its reward in

wealth that ranks him among the substantial citizens of Rock Island County. His accumulation of this world's goods is attributable to none other than

his own indomitable energy, keen judgment and energetic endeavor.

In December, 1853, Dr. Rogers was united in marriage with Miss Susan Moore, a native of Vermont, at Port Byron. The issue of their union has been two sons,

       - Frank E. and Edward M. Both the sons are partners in the firm of E.E. Rogers & Sons, bankers, grain dealer and druggists at Port Byron.

Frank E. Rogers, eldest son of the Doctor, married Miss E.A. Maxwell, and they have two children,- Walter Harry and Hazel. Edward M. Rogers, second child

of the Doctor, married Miss Elizabeth McCall, and they have one child, Bertha by name.

Mrs. Rogers, wife of the subject of this notice, is a member of the Congregational Church. Socially, Doctor Rogers belongs to Port Byron Lodge, No.

624, I.O.O.F. Politically, he comes from good old Democratic stock, his first Presidential vote having been cast for Franklin Pierce in 1852, and since that time he

has not failed to cast his vote in support of the principles of that party. Thus, in short, is the brief biographical sketch of Dr. Rogers, and thus we have an

exemplification of what push and energy may accomplish. He started out in life with nothing but a strong determination to succeed and a healthy constitution, and

by his energy and perseverance has procured a competency and a name and reputation second to none in the community in which he resides for fair and honest

       dealing with his fellow-man.
