John JOHNSON Intestate 3 Mar 1657

Administratix: widow Ann JOHNSON

John JOHNSON was living in Virginia by 1616 and when the census was taken, 1623, he was established at Jamestown with his wife Ann and two children, whose names are given in the muster,

1624,1625 as John, a year old and Ann, then four years old. In the extracts of all titles and estates sent home by Sir Francis Wyatt, 1625 John Johnson is credited with 200 acres at Archer Hope on Jamestown

Island, Half of this tract is of record:

John JOHNSON, yoeman and ancient planter of James City 100 acrew 12 Jan 1624, his first person divident, where of 15 acres is situated on the east the Backe River etc and 85 acres are upon a small

branch of Achcer’s Hope Creek, parting the same from the main devdt of Ensign William Spencer.

Upon the back of said land fee rent 1 shilling for every 50 acres. Note: the former patent granted by Sir George Yeardly is to be accounted void.

On 16 Aug 1624, John JOHNSON was ordered to repair the late dwelling house of Ensign Wm Spencer on James City Island and make good the fences about the ground according to an agreement entered into by the two men. John was party to a suite over a sow in 1629.

Issue: 2 Ann 3 John repatented 1652 land granted to his father John JOHNSON 12 Jan 1624 and accrueth due unto him and being son and heir of said John JOHNSON.

2. Ann JOHNSON (John) married Edward TRAVIS I, who on 25 Jan 1637 patented 900 acres James City County upon the head of Upper Chippokes Creek and adjacent Jeremiah DICKENSON 200

acres, their od due in right of John JOHNSON, his wife and two children the daughter and heir of said John JOHNSON, he said Travis marrying. Among the headrights named in this patent were Walter JOHNSON and Walter TRAVIS. The aforementioned patent was renewed 25 Feb 1638 in the names of Edward Travis and Johnson son of John JOHNSON deceased.

Given the title "Ancient Planter" by virtue of his owning land in Virginia before 1616. He lived on 15 acres on James Island, and raised tobacco and other crops on 85 acres in Jockeys Neck.

On November 18, 1618, the Virginia Company provided that "the ancient adventurers and Planters which were transported thither with Intent to Inhabit at their own costs and charges before the coming away of Sir Thomas Dale Knight, and have so continued during the space of three years, shall have upon a first Division to be by us augmented one hundred acres of land for their personal adventure." It also provided that those who came at the Company's expense would be allotted 100 acres after they had served the Company for seven years, subject to an annual rent of one shilling per fifty acres. In 1624 John Johnson received a patent from captain general and governor of the colony Sir Francis Wyatt for 100 acres (probably the same land he had been granted by the previous Governor, Sir George Yeardley, whose grants were disallowed as beyond his authority). Wyatt's grant was for the above mentioned land on James Island and in Jockeys Neck.

"John Johnson, Yeoman and ancient planter of James city, on January 12, 1624/25, patented as his first personal divident a tract of 100 acres in James City County, 15 acres being in the northeastern part of Jamestown Island toward Ensign William Spence, deceased, east of a marsh, and south of Backe River; and 85 acres being north to a small branch of Archer's Hope Creek, parting the same from the main devt. of Ensign William Spencer, south of another branch of the Creek, west of Archer's Hope Creek and east of a swamp on the back of the land; Fee Rent: one shilling yearly.

Johnson escaped the Indian massacre of 22 March 1622, when five people in the Archer's Hope area were killed; he was probably living on his James Island property at the time. The Muster of the Inhabitants of "James Citie" (16 February 1623/24) listed John Johnson, his wife, and two children. The Muster of 24 January 1624/25 lists John Johnson, wife wife Ann, daughter Ann, aged four years, and son John, aged one year, living on James Island.

1623 John Johnson appears on the list as a member of the Company of Adventurers and Planters of the City of London for the First Colony in Virginia in Letters Patent granted by King James I "whether they migrate in their own person to be planters there in the plantation aforesaid or do not migrate but adventure their money, goods, or chattels."

Notes for John Johnson:

John Johnson Jr was born about 1623, married about 1643, but his wife's name is unknown, and he died after 1659, but there was a John Johnson alive in 1704 and paying taxes for land on James Island, as the Quit Rent rolls of that year listed him as owner of 260 acres there. With his brother-in-law Edward Travis, John Jr patented 900 acres due his father on Upper Chippokes Creek across the river in what is now northwest Surry County in 1638. He sold his half of that property to Robert Roberts 5 Jun 1653, no wife named. On 25 Mar 1654, he repatented his father's100 acres on Jamestown Island, with 35 acres added making, with the 15 acre homestead, a total of 150 acres(Patent Book 3, p.27). On 8 Aug 1659, he sold the 15-acre Jamestown Island property to Edward Travis. But this transaction was accomplished by Edward repatenting the property, rather than by deed. Or if there were a deed, it did not survive the various fires in the Statehouse in Jamestown and the Courthouse in Williamsburg, most disastrously during the Civil War. For a deed of sale would show a wife's name. And there were often deeds of gift to children, eliminating the need for a will. And there is no record of the sale of the remainder of the Jockey's Neck land out of the family. In fact, a search for a chain of title for the property found nothing from 1654 until 1842. When he sold his land in Surrey County in 1653, he had no wife. But he was only 30 years old, and may have remarried. But nothing has been found about John Johnson Jr after 1659. There was a John Johnson who paid quit rent on James Island in 1704. Whether he was living there or not, we do not know. It could have been John (1659) who lived in Isle of Wight County, but may have still owned the land on James Island.. . . A John Johnson "of Lower Norfolk" apparently sided with the rebel Nathaniel Bacon, for in 1677 he was exempted from the king's pardon, property forfeit, and hanged. Whether this was John Jr (1623) age 54, or someone else altogether, is not known. We do not, in fact, have any record of wife or children for John Johnson Jr. Eddis Johnson, in The Johnsons and Johnstons of Corrowaugh in Isle of Wight County, 1979, explains on page 29 his reason for claiming that Robert Johnson was the son of John Johnson Jr, thus: "Any documentary evidence regarding his ancestry, time and place of birth, and first marriage would have perished in one of the three fires that destroyed the statehouses at Jamestown and the records at Williamsburg during the Civil War. However, the circumstantial evidence is persuasive that he was the sone (sic) of John Johnson, Jr.,..... In the perspective of time, place, and history, the continuity of this relationship is logical. Furthermore, there is no evidence that Robert Johnson came to our shores as an immigrant or as the son of an immigrant. It is also significant that no other of family of Johnsons appears to have made a prior claim of descent from John Johnson, Yeoman and Ancient Planter." Unfortunately, this argument may not be as persuasive to others as it was to Mr. Eddis Johnson. Actually, three men named Johnson were in the area, were of appropriate age to be sons of John Johnson Jr, and for whom no record of immigration has been found. They are all suspected but not proven to be sons of John Johnson, Jr:

. 1. Robert Johnson (1643?-1733) married c1668 Katherine; m.1693 Ann, of whom below .2. Willia m Johnson/Johnston (1648-1719) married Sarah Griffin/Griffeth or Elizabeth Grantham. . .

His land in Isle of Wight County adjoined Robert's. And the DNA Project comparing descendants .

. . of Robert and William indicates a 60% chance that they were brothers. Actually, there were TWO. . . .William Johnsons in Surry AND Isle of Wight Counties in this same time period. One married. . . .Sarah, the other married Elizabeth. One of the William Johnstons and Sarah Griffeth apparently had:. . . . 21. Benjamin Johnston (1693-1767) married Mary. . . . . . . .211. William Johnson (c1722) married Hester Matthews . 3. John Johnson (1659-1707) married c1687 Mary; m.1701 Mary Thompson Day

Notes for Anne Goche:

It seems that there was some dissension in this family. Jeffrey GOCHE left land to his nephew Jeffrey with the thought that his parents Jno JOHNSON and Ann GOCHE would only live on the land. It seems

that Jeffrey GOCHE did not trust Jno JOHNSON so he left the plantation to his young nephew with hope

that they could live there until Jeffrey JOHNSON became 18 in about 1678.

NOTE: What we see above proves that the statement following 3a. Jeffrey JOHNSON will is true.

That is Jeffrey JOHNSON lived in what is now Fauquier County, Virginia in 1714. He may

not have moved but the county boundaries changed around him creating an interesting picture

of how the names Jeffrey JOHNSON and John JOHNSON both appear in Richmond, King

George, Stafford, Prince William and Fauquier County, Virginia records. It

would be real

interesting to see maps of the southern part of Fauquier

County, Virginia as these new

Counties were created.

Northumberland (1648), Stafford(1664), Richmond(1692), King George (1720-1721), Prince William(1730) and Fauquier (1759) Genealogist of Fauquier County, should find this very interesting.
