Descendants of Rhwwttchen Hudgins

Generation 1

1.      RHWWTTCHEN1 HUDGINS was born in 1595 in Llandoff, Glamorgan, Wales. Rhwwttchen is my 10th Great Grandfather.

Notes for Rhwwttchen Hudgins:

RHWWTTCHEN (which means, 'Lord of the Far Seas'.)

At some time, not now precisely known by anyone, a man by the name of Rhwwttchen moved from Wales to Liverpool in Lancastershire County, England. The English authorities found it difficult to pronounce the name as it was spelled but simple to spell it phonetically as it sounded to them. There were many common English names of similar sound such as Hutchins, Huggins and Higgins.

This new name, as pronounced had some new sound; it started with a gutteral Celtic rolling "Rh" followed by a sound like "udd"-in the middle and ending with a soft sound like "jinz". It was simplified by phonetics into Hudgins, pronounced Hud-Jinz. and thus it has been ever since. Occasionally one sees the name spelled in other forms, such as Hudgen and Hudgin, but the plural form of Hudgins dominates.

Rhwwttchen Hudgins had the following child:

2.               i. THOMAS2 HUDGINS was born in 1620 in Liverpool, Lancashirer, England. He married ELIZABETH MORGAN. She was born in 1620 in Glamorgan, Wales.

He was born in Liverpool in 1620 whence his father and family had moved from the town of Llandaffin, Glamorganshire, Wales. He was a ship-builder by trade, of a family of shipbuilders, traders and fishermen.

(2) JOANNA DIGGES on 30 Nov 1756 in Kingston Parish, Gloucester Co, VA.

Notes for William Hudgins:

William left England with his brothers and their families in1743 with their families to settle of Piankatank River, Gloucester Co, VA.

The four sons were all sea captains and operated some of the vessels owned by their grandfather Thomas. The four brothers frequently visited the Tidewater area of Virginia and it appealed to them as a good staging point for their trading business.

They operated a plantation, continued to build ships and conducted shipping and trading and garnered the wealth to eventually acquire most of the shore of the Piankatank River from Gywnn Island to Hampton, Gloucester. Some of the family fled to Nova Scotia with the British Loyalists after 1776.

William was the most highly possessed of spirit of entrepreneur and he was a natural leader. He formed his brothers into a group which sold their properties in England and obtained grants of land in Virginia, took off in a year 1743 to settle pernently.

As his headquarters, William Hudgins purchased a manor known as Hess Castle from Capt. John Armistead. As time passed they worked their lands, most of which were located in Middlesex, York, Elizabeth City and Hanover Counties. They prospered and they traded. In a few years William had acquired by exchange or otherwise all the manors surrounding Hesse and owned a continuous strip that extended for miles down the river to Seaford overlooking Old Point Comfort (Elizabeth City County, now the city of Hampton, Va.).

Notes for Mary Holder:

Mary Holder Hudgins died in 1748 at Hesse Castle in Gloucester. This left William with a problem, how to raise his children, particularly his eldest boy, Houlder, for whom be had great love and expectations.

William Hudgins and Mary Holder had the following children:

i.        HOULDER5 HUDGINS was born in 1738 in Liverpool, Lancashirer, England. He died in 1815.

Notes for Houlder Hudgins:

In 1749 William Hudgins sent his son Houlder back to Liverpool to his grandparents, Robert and Charlotte Hudgins to be educated and to receive proper training as befitted to the eldest son of a family of position. Houlder Hudgins was educated at Christ College in Bristol and at the Naval College at Dartmouth, from which he graduated in 1756 and was commissioned an officer in the Royal Navy. Houlder Hudgins served in the Royal Navy for nine years and attained the rank of Captain. In 1765 he resigned from the service. He must have served with distinction because he applied for and received a grant of 1200 acres of land adjacent to lands of his father's along the bank of the Pianketank River in Gloucester, Virginia, overlooking the beautiful Gwyn Island where lived the girl who was one day to become his second wife.

If William Hudgins had been an astute, business man, it must be admittted that his son, Houlder, was even more so. When he returned to his land in Gloucester in 1768 he came fully equipped with materials and furnishings for a manor house, twenty skilled workmen from his grandfather’s shipyard and the capital tools to set up a shipyard of his own after his house was built. His grandfather, a man of great means and foresight, undoubtedly provided the capital to do this.

"Clifton', the manor house that rose on the site by the river, was reputed to have been the most stately in the county. Its gardens of roses were renouned far and wide, its design one of colonial charm in the "Grand Southern" manner. The main house had twenty-two rooms and there were plantation out-buildings and quarters for families of slaves which grew to number over 200 at the time of his death.

Notes for Anthony Hudgins:

Anthony Hudgin Revolutionary War Pension File states on 13 Aug 1832 he was 73 years old. He entered the service of the United States under the following officers: Capt. Josiah Foster, Isaac Foster was Lieu.; Humphrey Hudgins Ensign, Col. Sir John Peyton, Major Boswell and Major Throgmorton were field officers. He went out first when a man from Middlesex, had gotten leave to return to England about the commencement of the war and bad weather drove him up into Horn Harbor, and Josiah Foster supposing it to be the enemy called out himself and about 15 others. He left the service two or three days after Cornwallis surrendered at York. He was in no engagement worth speaking of--he was in a small engagement on Cherry Island with a small boat loaded with Alum salt.

He was one of those who volunteered under Houlder Hudgins and Philip Tabb to go to Richmond, they marched through part of King and Queen County, crossed at West Point or rather at the brick house, through part of New Kent, James City, down to Williamsburg, and from there to Burwell's ferry where they saw the fleet pass down James River. He served other tours at Williamsburg at the New Magazine. At the time Lord Cornwallis came to York he was called out with the Gloucester militia, they were drawn into line near Whiting's Mill in the edge of King & Queen county and encamped in Hubbard's old fields just on the Gloucester side where they went to Ware Church and thence to Seawell's old field where again they made a standing encampment. Richard Billups, Peter Bennett and Robert Gayle's companies were ordered to gather up all canoes in which a man might cross York River and carry them to the mouth of that river, he was among them. The morning after they got there there was a cessation of arms and they remained there two days and then were discharged. He did not get acquainted with any of the continental regiments, companies or officers. He had no evidence to show when he was called out or when he was discharged as he never received a written discharged. He can prove his service by William Digges and Isaac Smith. He was born in Kingston Parish, Gloucester County in the year 1759, he has no record of his age, he thinks he was out upwards four years in all. He was allowed pension on 13 August 1832. His name appears as Anthony Hudgin/Hudgen/Hudgins.

Answer of Alexander Carson:

“He states there are many errors exhibited against him. It is true that he is married to the widow of John Hudgens, deceased, and when he married, the Hudgens were greatly in debt and left a son a small child. All which debts this defendant paid….”

Deposition of Nathan Ayers 24 November 1821 at Buckingham County, Virginia, tavern of Hezekiah Lipscomb at Buckingham Courthouse.

“I knew John Hudgens who was the reputed father of Salley Cummonger, a natural born child who married William Vest is now dead. John Hudgens went from this county to Kentucky where I heard he married and had a child, John, and then died. John Hudgens had the following brothers and sisters: Holloway Hudgens, Rebecca Fuqua who married Joseph Fuqua, Hannah who married Boaz Ford, Delila who married William Gibson and Moses Hudgens. Ford and wife are both dead and have the following decendents: The children of their son Luke, Patsy, the daughter of Boaz Ford and wife, Ambrose the son married a Mauppen, Samuel, William, Ballard, and Boaz Ford and Maria who married John Ayers. The said Delila who married William Gibson is dead and also her husband and have left the following descendants: Mary who married Joseph Childress, Betsey who married William Reese, William Gibson, the plaintiff, Thomas Gibson, Asa Gibson and Rebecca who married Allen Taylor. I know Daniel Hudgens and I do not think he is a brother of John Hudgens who went to Kentucky. He was the son of Moses Hudgens, the brother of John Hudgens. From the book, The Long Hunters ofd Skin House Branch, by Ruth Paull Buirdette and Nancy Montgomery Berley. “Depositions in the Green County Circuit court records tell that Daniel and John Hudgens were there with Glover in 1780. There is evidence to support the belief that John Gibson, Alexander Carson and other members of their families were also along. They seem to have spent much of their time hunting and locating land, making tomahawk claims along the Green River where they lived. The Indians discovered that the three stations - Pitman’s Skaggs’ and Glover’s- were very weak, so they made a raid on them in March of 1781. Several houses were captured and John Hudgens was killed at Glover’s. It seems likely that John Gibson was killed or fatally injured also because an Order Book of Lincoln County, Kentucky, lists John Hudgens deceased, and Ann Hudgens the widow. It also lists John Gibson deceased, with Ann Hudgens the administrator. A few years later she married Alexander Carson in Lincoln County.”

Notes for Moses Hudgens:

Robert HUDGINS was a shipbuilder and merchant based in Liverpool, England, having moved there from Wales. Robert sponsored his four sons William, John, Lewis and Robert as ship's captains plying the trade lanes up and down the east coast and the Caribbean. They had a shipyard in Mathews Co. VA and one in Barbados at least. Incidentally, there was a branch of the SEALES family in Barbados, and still is. The four sons left England in 1743 with their families to settle on the Piankatank River in Gloucester Co. VA (likely now mostly in Mathews Co. since it split off of Gloucester Co.) They engaged in plantation operation, shipbuilding and shipping and eventually acquired most of the shore of the Piankatank River from Gwynn's Island to Hampton in Gloucester Co. There is still a plantation home in the area called 'Clifton' which is still occupied, I understand. As the family grew, some went down the coast thru the Carolinas to Georgia and Florida. Some of those turned the corner and moved across the south into Ark and TX. At least three families came thru the Cumberland Gap into TN and KY. One branch went to KY first and intermarried with the HUNTERS, BOONES and the TUCKERS (at the moment I'm thinking my branch) before moving back down to White Co. TN. Another settled where the Memphis Airport is now before moving to southern ILL. What is now South Marion, IL was at one time called Hudgens City.

Notes for Frances Hudgens:

Bushwacker Bill Wilson, through his mother (my great- great- grandmother) Frances Hudgens Wilson Allen Malone, was of Welsh extraction. The surname HUDGENS is of Welsh origin; spelled originally Rhwwttchen, which means "Lord of the Far Sea". The Welsh clan moved from Wales to Liverpool, England in the 1600's, where they began to spell the name phoeneticaly the way it was pronounced in English (also Hudgins and Hutchins). Notes for Samuel A Strawhun:

Another, more infamous relative was Samuel Strawhun (Strawhan, Strawn, Strawhorn). Related to the Paulsell and Hudgen families of Phelps County Missouri, Samuel was a "notorius desparado with many notches on his gun." In 1869, he crossed the famous Wild Bill Hickok who had just been elected Sheriff of Hays, Kansas.

"...as Hickok settled a disturbance in a saloon, Samuel Strawhun (variously spelled) drew on him. Same result. Hickok pulled the twin Colts and put two shots into Strawhun before he could pull the trigger."

Shortly after assuming office, in August 1869, Hickok took on a gang of drunks who were shooting up the streets of Hays City. The revelry was halted when Sheriff Hickok fatally wounded ringleader Bull Mulvey. About a month later, a similar riot erupted in John Bitter's Beer Saloon, but once again Sheriff Hickok killed the ringleader, shooting Samuel Strawhun in the head.

Sometime toward the end of 1867 records show that Hickok was in Hays City Kansas, working as a deputy U.S. Marshal and, apparently, no longer working with the Army. In September of 1867 Hickok was involved in one of his most famous shootouts. A man named Samuel Strawhun, a well known Hays city ruffian, decided to "clean out" one of the local saloons. As city Marshal Hickok moved in to stop the trouble. Hickok warned the armed and dangerous man to cease causing trouble. Strawhun refused, made a move for his gun and was promptly shot through the head by Hickok. Hickok had to shoot another man, in performance of his duties, named Mulvey who was another town troublemaker. In neither of these actions was any blame laid upon Hickok. On the contrary, he was applauded. Many attempts upon Hickok's life were made during these days. He developed habits, of personal safety, to protect himself. He would walk down the center of the street, eyes darting back and forth. No one was allowed to get too near. If he noted a lot of noise and disturbance coming from a saloon, he would turn sharply from his path, push the saloon doors open hard enough to cause them to slam back against the walls, and then faced the noisy crowd. He would then inform them to quiet down, and then leave as suddenly as he had arrived. Seldom did he have to repeat himself. The local newspaper wrote, "Hays city is under the guardian care of Wild Bill, is quiet, and doing well". There is also a confrontation, between Hickok and five cavalry troopers, that is somewhat in dispute as to the exact facts of the event. It is generally conceded by historians that Hickok was attacked by the five troopers. The result of that attack is that one, possibly two, of the troopers were killed by Hickok. How or why the confrontation occurred, and the exact sequence of events are in not known. Since no official action was taken by the Army, against Hickok, it must be assumed that he acted in self-defense.

1869 Samuel Strawhun shot by Sheriff Wild Bill Hickok

Just after midnight, Ellis County Sheriff Wild Bill Hickok and his deputy respond to a report that a local drunken ruffian named Samuel Strawhun, a teamster, and several drunken buddies are tearing up John Bitter's Beer Saloon in Hays City, Kansas. When Hickok arrives and orders the men to stop, Strawhun turns to attack him, and Hickok shoots him in the head. Strawhun died instantly, as did the riot. Such were Wild Bill's less-than-restrained law enforcement methods.

Famous for his skill with a pistol and steely-calm under fire, James Butler Hickok initially seemed to be the ideal man for the sheriff of Ellis County, Kansas. The good citizens of Hays City, the county seat, were tired of the wild brawls and destructiveness of the hard-drinking buffalo hunters and soldiers who took over their town every night. They hoped the famous "Wild Bill" could restore peace and order, and in the late summer of 1869, elected him as interim county sheriff.

Tall, athletic, and sporting shoulder-length hair and a sweeping mustache, Hickok cut an impressive figure, and his reputation as a deadly shot with either hand was often all it took to keep many potential lawbreakers on the straight and narrow. As one visiting cowboy later recalled, Hickok would stand "with his back to the wall, looking at everything and everybody under his eyebrowsjust like a mad old bull."

But when Hickok applied more aggressive methods of enforcing the peace, some Hays City citizens wondered if their new cure wasn't worse than the disease. Shortly after becoming sheriff, Hickok shot a belligerent soldier who resisted arrest, and the man died the next day. A few weeks later Hickok kills Strawhun. While his brutal ways were indisputably effective, many Hays City citizens were less than impressed that after only five weeks in office he had already found it necessary to kill two men in the name of preserving peace. During the regular November election later that year, the people expressed their displeasure, and Hickok lost to his deputy, 144-89. Though Wild Bill Hickok would later go on to hold other law enforcement positions in the West, his first attempt at being a sheriff had lasted only three months.

Quoted from BLOODLETTERS AND BADMEN

"Sam Strawhun earned his reputation as a gunfiughter and killer in Hays Cty, Kan, just after the Civil War. He was a vicious, rowdy drunk who shot first and asked the name of his victim later. Hays was a wide open cowtown for a number of years but a Vigilance Committee soon hired Wild Bill Hickok to keep the peace and the shootings abated. Strawhun was order to leave town and, angered by the directive, proceeded, with Joseph Weiss, to beat up a vigilante named Alonzo Webster." "Webster grabbed his pistol and shot Weiss; Strawhun fled, going to Ellsworth. The outlaw returned to Hays on September 27, 1869, still brooding about his exile. He entered Bittle's Saloon with about eighteen cowboys, old friends, and the mob began to shoot up the place. Bittles sent for Hickok, who arrived in a jovial mood." "At first, Wild Bill tried to fake Strawhun out of any gunplay. the gunfighter and his friends were then in the street, having taken all the saloon's beer glasses with them. HIckok ignored Strawhun's threat: 'I shall kill someone tonight just for luck!' The marshal smilingly collected several beer glasses from the drunken cowboys and took them back to the saloon. Strawhun followed him."

"As Hickok stood at the bar, staring into a mirror, Strawhim threatened to break every glass in the place. Wild Bill's lips curled into an ugly snarl,'Do, and they will carry you out.' Hickok, watching in the mirror, saw Strawhim step behind him and reached for his pistol. The marshal whirled about, gun already in hand and shot Strawhun dead."

Samuel never married. It is believed he is buried on Boot Hill in Hays City, KS. Charles McCain writes: "History in the county does not reflect how Sam became a gunfighter or what happened to place him on that path!" SOURCE: Charles Roland McCain - researcher
