Descendants of Robert Brandon

Generation 1

1.      ROBERT1 BRANDON was born about 1530 in England. He died on 30 May 1591 in London, England (Burial St. Verdast Church alias Foster Lane Church). He married (1) KATHERINE BARBER on 13 Jun 1548 in Saint Mary, Woolnoth, London, Eng. She was born in England. She died in 1574 in London, England (Burial St. Verdast Church alias Foster Lane Church). He married (2) ELIZABETH OSBORNE after 1574 in England. She was born in England. She died in 1588 in London, England (Burial St. Verdast Church alias Foster Lane Church). Robert is my 12th Great Grandfather.

Notes for Robert Brandon:

One of the Queen Elizabeth's Royal Goldsmiths 1558-1580. Appointed Chamberlain (treasurer) for City of London, 1583-1591 This is my assumption only, so please don't repeat it as fact.

This Brandon family was very prominent and prosperous. And one did not receive 'appointments' from the throne without inner pull. It seems that the entire Brandon family is very well documented, except for the father of Robert.

I have read in two different documents that Robert's daughter, Alice is said to be either niece or granddaughter of Charles Brandon. In studying Charles' family, I have ruled out niece. That leaves granddaughter. This is very interesting! Mary Tudor, sister of Henry VIII, was married to Charles Brandon at the time of Robert's birth. There are two documented illegitimate sons born to Charles before his marriage to Mary. However, at the time of Robert's birth, Mary was very sick. She came down with the 'sweating sickness' and never recovered. She was bed-ridden for nearly 3 years, dying 6/25/1533, giving Charles plenty of time to 'play' around. And I doubt seriously if it would be made public that Charles was messing around on the king's sister, especially if she were ill. Three months after Mary's death, Charles married his 4th wife - his 14 year old ward, Catherine Willoughby. Charles didn't even show up for Mary's funeral & Mary's brother, Henry VIII made the arrangements, not Charles.

So piecing this all together, I believe there is a really big possibility that Robert is the son of Charles Brandon.

Robert Brandon and Katherine Barber had the following children:

2.               i. EDWARD2 BRANDON was born on 30 Jan 1551 in London, England (Christened 30 Jan1551 Saint Mary Woolnoth, London, Eng). He died before 1628 in Probably near Martin's Brandon, VA. He married HELEN UNKNOWN. She was born in England. She died after 1628 in Probably near Martin's Brandon, Virginia.

3.               ii. ALICE BRANDON was born about 1555 in London, England (Christened Saint Vedast Foster Lane, London, England). She died between 1611-1612 in Garlick Hill, London, England (Burial St James Garlickhithe Parish). She married Nicholas Hilliard, son of Richard Hilliard and Laurence Wall on 15 Jul 1576. He was born in 1547 in Exeter, Devon, Eng. He died on 07 Jan 1619.

iii.      MARY BRANDON was born in 1566 in London, England (Baptized St Vedast Foster Lane, London, Eng). She married John (Capt) Martin, son of Richard Martin on 23 May 1586 in St Vedast Foster Lane, London, Eng. He was born in 1560 in England. He died in 1632 in Martin's Brandon Plantation, Jamestown, Prince George Co, VA.

Notes for Mary Brandon:

Mary Brandon's father was Robert Brandon, Chamberlain of London and also a goldsmith.Mary's sister was married to Nicolas Hilliard painter for James 1, and Elizabeth 1. They are also related to the Charles Brandon who married Henry the 8th's, sister Mary Tudor when she returned from France after being queen of France. Henry the 8th allowed his sister to marry for love after doing her duty and marrying the nasty king of France. After her tour of duty in France, she returned to England and chose Charles Brandon as her husband. Charles Brandon was Henry the 8th's best friend, and they had been raised together as children.

iv.      SARA BRANDON was born about 1548 in London, England (Christened 11/13/1549 Saint Mary Woolnoth, London, England).

v.       REBECCA BRANDON was born about 1552 in London, England (Christened 12/21/1552 Saint Mary Woolnoth, England).

Notes for Elizabeth Osborne:

Brandon's wife Katherine was buried at St Vedast in 1574. His second wife was Elizabeth Chapman, née Osborne (bur. 1588).

Robert Brandon and Elizabeth Osborne had the following child:

vi.      LUCY BRANDON was born in 1577 in London, England (Baptized 29 Dec 1577 St Vedast-Foster Lane Church).

Generation 2

2.      EDWARD2 BRANDON (Robert1) was born on 30 Jan 1551 in London, England (Christened 30 Jan1551 Saint Mary Woolnoth, London, Eng). He died before 1628 in Probably near Martin's Brandon, VA. He married HELEN UNKNOWN. She was born in England. She died after 1628 in Probably near Martin's Brandon, Virginia.

Edward Brandon and Helen Unknown had the following child:

4.               i. JOHN3 BRANDON was born before 1628 in Probably near Martin's Brandon, VA. He died after 1675 in Virginia. He married UNKNOWN.

3.      ALICE2 BRANDON (Robert1) was born about 1555 in London, England (Christened Saint Vedast Foster Lane, London, England).

Notes for Alice Brandon:

It's sometimes said Alice is either the niece or the grandniece of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk. She is the subject of one of most appealing miniatures of her husband. Shortly after their marriage, they traveled to France in the entourage of Sir Amyas Paulet, the English ambassador. Hilliard, probably on Queen Elizabeth's orders, entered the service of François, duc d’Alençon. Although her husband may have returned at a later date, Alice was back in London by May 1578, when their first child, Daniel, was baptised. By 1579, the Hilliards lived in a house in Gutter Lane, off Cheapside in London, where Hilliard also had his studio. Hilliard does not seem to have been reliable in money matters. When Alice’s father died, he made no mention of his son-in-law or grandchildren in his will, instead stipulating that the allowance he left to Alice be administered by the Goldsmith’s Company. Although there was an Alice Hillyard buried at St. Margaret's Westminster on May 16, 1611, this was probably not Alice Brandon. Hilliard is known to have had a second wife and records show a Nicholas Hilliard marrying Susan Gysard at St. Mary at Hill on 3 Aug 1608, placing Alice's death before that date.

Notes for Nicholas Hilliard:

NICHOLAS HILLIARD 1547 - 1619Nicholas Hilliard was born in Exeter, Devon, England in 1547

and died on 7 Jan 1619 in London, England. His father was Richard Hilliard (1519 - 1594), a staunch Protestant goldsmith who served as High Sheriff for Exeter and Devonshire in 1560. His mother was Laurence Wall, the daughter of John Wall, also a London goldsmith. Nicholas married Alice Brandon (1555 - 1612) on 15 Jul 1576 in London, England. They had seven children. She was the daughter of Robert Brandon, one of the Queen's two Royal Goldsmiths and served as the elected chamberlain (treasurer) for the City of London between 1583 to 1591. His father-in-law was also a long time member of the prestigious Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths of London, a trade association for goldsmiths, silversmiths, and jewelers.Nicholas was best known for his portrait miniatures of members of the courts of Elizabeth I and James I of England. In 1570 he was appointed by Queen Elizabeth I to be "Court Miniaturist and Goldsmith", being the first great native born painter of the Renaissance era in Elizabethan England. He was made a freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths of London in 1569. Nicholas painted for forty-five years but was plagued with financial problems during his life even spending one year in 1617 in Ludgate Prison for debtors for standing surety for the debt of another who failed to pay the debt.

Early Virginia records indicate that William Brandon and his brothers purchased land in 1757 in what is now Halifax Co. Va. from William Byrd III, of Charles City Co., an influential planter who had acquired several thousand acres in the Lunenburg-Halifax Co. Area. for resale to land seekers from Pennsylvania.

William Brandon's cousins settled about 80 miles to the south,in Rowan Co. North Carolina about the same time. Many of the descendants of this North Carolina branch spread west into Kentucky and Tennessee in the early 1800's

William Brandon and Elizabeth Irvine had the following children:

16.            i. JOHN8 BRANDON was born between 1744-1746 in York Co, PA. He died on 20 Aug 1799 in York Co, SC. He married Mary Lawson, daughter of John Lawson and Priscilla Unknown on 20 Jan 1772 in Halifax Co, VA. She was born in 1752 in Halifax Co, VA. She died after 1799 in York Co, SC.

vi.      ANNA BRANDON was born in Halifax Co, VA.

14.      FRANCIS7 BRANDON (Thomas6, John5, Thomas4, John3, Edward2, Robert1) was born about 1730 in Lunenburg Co (Formerly Brunswick Co), VA. He died in 1789 in Halifax Co, VA. He married ELINOR RICHMOND. She died in Halifax Co, VA.

Notes for Francis Brandon:

Francis Brandon of Amtrim Parish, Halifax Co, VA, dated 30 Sep 1788,

wife--Eleanor, sons--Francis, Thomas, William and David. daughters--Elizabeth, Peggy, Mary, Nancy, Jean and Caty. Exe, --wife, Wm Richamond, John Lawson, (lived on Wynn Creek near David & Thomas Brandon)

The Brandon family traces its origins in the region to 1746 when Francis Brandon purchased land in the Halifax County portion of what was then Lunenburg County from the Byrd family of Westover, Charles City County.' In 1750 a William Brandon purchased land in the area from William Byrd II' In 1758 David Brandon and William Brandon were appointed "processioners" by the vestry of Antrim Parish, the Anglican Parish that formerly incorporated all of Halifax County. "' Although kinsmen, the precise relationship of these various Brandons is uncertain.

In his will filed July 16, 1778, David Brandon left the "land and plantation whereon I now live, containing three hundred and thirty acres," to his eldest son William. It was this William Brandon who most probably built the oldest part of the present dwelling house on Brandon Plantation as well as the existing kitchen/slave house. The general construction date of the house and outbuilding, ca. 1800, has been determined by stylistic evidence rather than documentation and could vary at least a decade.

William Brandon, known as William Brandon, Sr., died in 1841 leaving his property, to his son William Byrd Brandon. Because stylistic characteristics of the east section of the dwelling house suggest a date of 1840 or later, it is a reasonable to assume that this portion was added by William Byrd Brandon soon after he received title to the place.

The Brandon family typifies the middling gentry who occupied Halifax County in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. They were slave owners and lived in reasonable prosperity, yet they were not on the level of such leading families as the Bruces of Halifax County who lived in architectural splendor and owned thousands of acres worked by scores of slaves. The Brandons' dwelling illustrates the type of housing inhabited by people of their rank: a commodious vernacular building of little pretension. Although twentieth-century alterations have compromised the integrity of the interior of the ca. 1800 section, the ca. 1842 section retains its most significant features.

The mantels and stair of the ca. 1842 section set the house apart from other examples of rural antebellum architecture by being attributed to the shop of a noted black cabinetmaker and carpenter, Thomas Day. While the attribution is based primarily on stylistic evidence, Day is know to have worked for the Brandon family. In an 1844 estate accounting of the estate of Francis Brandon, the two executors, William and Jessee (sic) Brandon, notes a payment of $14.00 to Thomas Day.

Notes for John Brandon:

John Brandon's birth-year is not known, but it is believed that he was born about 1744-46 as he received a land grant in York County, South Carolina April 25, 1767 consisting of 2 parcels of 200 Acres each. Described as being on waters of Turkey Creek, on head of Tius Branch, on both sides of Waggon Road, including Wm. Hillhouse's Great Cowpen.

This could have been a grant given to young men that had signed up for Militia duty to help claim part of that country from the Indians, as they were continually pushed further to the west. He would have to have been at least 21 to claim this grant. Records indicate that he did not move onto this claim until some time after he had married in Halifax Co. Virginia in 1772 and had already started his family.

John Brandon left a will in York Co. South Carolina August 20, 1799. His will mentions that 247 Acres given to them by Mary's father John Lawson in Halifax Co. Virginia, and that the

family could return there if that was their wish.

John's sons John Jr., Joseph, and Francis stayed on , married and raised their families in York Co.

S.C. James moved to Jasper Co. Georgia. Irvine, married a Mary Lawson (cousin) and later moved to Trigg Co. Kentucky

David's will, written in 1769 and probated July 1778, indicates hiswife's name was Rebecca. Children: William, Thomas, Elizabeth, Margaret,Mary, Agnes, Rebecca.

From the Deeds and wills of Francis, William and David Brandon in HalifaxCounty, Va there appears to be three brothers. They had adjoining land, they witnessed documents for each other and served as security for eachother on bonds. In addition, the given names of their children andgrandchildren are similar. Also the names of their children andgrandchildren provide a strong point of evidence for the father ofFrancis, William and David to be Thomas Brandon. Thomas Brandon alongwith Francis purchased Lunenburg County, Va land in 1746. Each of thethree brothers names a son Thomas and this is the only one of the son'snames that is found in all three families. Thomas is also carried forwardto the grandsons in the three families also. There is the probabilityalso that the three brothers also had at least one sister, who probablymarried Hutchens Burton. This would account for Thomas being found in hisold age in the Burton household as a titheable.
